My name is Ashley Vallario and I am the girlfriend of fallen firefighter Yaroslav Katkov, we had been together nine going on ten years when he passed. With Yaro’s anniversary quickly approaching, it is very important to me that the WHOLE truth gets told and that he is never forgotten. Terrible and unfortunate events took place on the mountain that day, and we need to shed light onto those events.
We were hopeful that justice would be met by now but the captain is still employed by CALfire and we want justice! We’ve been left with nothing but the feeling of disappointment due to this mediocre pursuit of justice.
That day we lost an amazing human due to the negligence of his very own captain. Reading through the green sheets and the OSHA report is absolutely heart wrenching. It doesn’t matter how many times you read it or how much time has passed, it takes a toll on you. I encourage you to read them. There were several severe signs of distress that went ignored and these reports admit that.
I want it to be clear that my fight is not against all the the firemen or the fire community. I am for the firemen. I just want to make sure that no family ever have to experience this kind of pain ever again. It is already so scary and worrisome to imagine the dangerous situations that your loved ones are subject to daily. They should not need to worry if they are in grave danger at the hands of their own captain.
This was much more than a tragic accident. This was negligence and severely poor leader ship!
Big changes need to happen and that’s why I’m reaching out to you!
WE NEED HELP. WE NEED JUSTICE.
This community needs to see change!
The OSHA report states this is not CALfire‘s first violation and I am here to say enough is enough!
I want the firemen and women to be safe,that is all. I want them to be able to return home to their families after their shifts. And I want the loved ones of those firemen and women to not be crippled by fear and anxiety that they may be at risk while completing daily routine task and training! I want to better this community! It needs to be done!
I’ve learned that ignorance is not bliss. This needs to be acknowledged addressed and we need to see those changes quickly!
I believe the first change we need to see is that the captain is no longer employed by CALfire. We need to see proper training and better leadership, our firemen and women need to be safe! How can they protect us if we cannot protect them?
Please help us seek the Justice he deserves!

How You Can Help Bring Justice For Yaro
We need awareness of what happened that day to Yaro to be spread through our communities so that the justice we demand will be heard. Read the Green Sheet Report, read the Cal-OSHA report, and in both investigations it is blatantly clear that Yaro was experiencing a medical emergency and his captain chose to not only ignore all the signs, but consciously chose to push Yaro to the point of no return. There were over 22 opportunities for that captain to be a hero and save a life, but he chose to take one instead. And he is still working with Cal Fire where people depend on him with their lives. This is not justice and his lack of moral and professional conduct make him a risk to everyone . Stand with us in asking our officials to do more; do better. We want Justice and need change.
